Title:

Raising the Ratio Seminar in Devon
Seminar at Foot Anstey to discuss the findings of the Raising the Ratio Task Force

Location:

Exeter, Devon

The RICS Raising the Ratio lunch (in association with Women in Property, Women in Surveying) took place at Foot Anstey’s Exeter offices on 18 October 2007.

The presentation was kicked off with a welcome by Richard Bagwell, Partner, Foot Anstey and an introduction by Jonathan Harris CBE, Chairman of the RICS Raising the Ratio Taskforce.

Survey reports commissioned by Raising the Ratio were then presented by Louise Ellison of the Investment Property Forum, and an overview of the activities of the Raising the Ratio Taskforce was presented by Sandi Rhys-Jones of Rhys-Jones Consultants.

Presentations were followed by a lively question and answer session chaired by Katy Wood of SMC Penrose Architects which led to some constructive discussions focusing on the best ways to encourage women to stay within and return to the surveying profession.

Particular focus was placed on flexible working both in addition and as opposed to part time working.

It was clear from the survey findings that many women remain interested in surveying (retaining their RICS non practising membership) but do not return to part or full time working. Their expertise is a valuable resource which could be utilised by private sector firms.

It appears that private sector firms are currently seeking well qualified employees but that there is a general perception, perhaps misconception, that part time and flexible opportunities do not exist within the profession. This may be stagnating dialogue between potential employers and employees.

There was support for more mentoring and opportunities for networking which might be significant in encouraging non-practising surveyors (both men and women) to make initial contact with local firms. It is hoped that such opportunities may now become possible following further efforts of the Raising the Ratio Task Force.
